Job Role Summary

Eskenazi Health is seeking an experienced Director of Biomedical Engineering. The primary responsibility of this role is to coordinate activities, give direction to personnel within the department and serves as a consultant on medical equipment matters.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

In addition, the Director of Biomedical Engineering will hold responsibility for: 

  • Delegating work projects to department personnel for two distinct work areas (medical equipment repair and radiation equipment repair).
  • Supervising new project and equipment evaluations; may include writing specifications designed to make recommendations regarding both new and replacement equipment.
  • Evaluating potential equipment purchases to determine utilization and value; may include organization cost of feasibility studies with proper documentation to facilitate recommendations.
  • Providing consultative service for researchers upon request. Assists in collection /verification of research data.
  • Recommendations to management; explaining and instructing medical staff with regard to selection and use of equipment.
  • Serving as liaison between medical staff with regard to selection and use of equipment.
  • Overall in-service education programs for medical staff relative to medical equipment.
  • Developing annual departmental budget.
  • The applications and adherence of personnel to hospital and departmental policies.
  • Conducting and reviewing personnel evaluations; ultimate responsibility for hire, discharge and discipline of personnel.

Job Requirements

The qualified candidate will have a Master's degree in Mechanical, Electrical or Biomedical Engineering and one year previous experience in an engineering environment in a hospital system; or a Bachelor's degree in one of the areas noted plus at least 3 years of engineering experience in related areas. Eskenazi Health offers comprehensive benefits including, tuition reimbursement, retirement plans through Empower, various on-campus dining options, a free fitness gym, free employee wellness programs, sky farm access and more.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Professional decision-making skills required for supervision and coordination of department activities and personnel.
  • Knowledge of current safety standards and economical considerations as basis for recommendations
  • Knowledge of newest equipment and advances in biomedical engineering field
  • Knowledge of SAP software
  • Ability to:
    • communicate effectively with all levels of hospital personnel
    • advise and inform medical staff of advantages/disadvantages of medical equipment.
    • effectively budget and track cost and expenditure variances.
    • prioritize tasks as a daily routine to best achieve hospital needs and expectations of the department
    • work closely with risk management, legal services, purchasing and administration to successfully assess and oversee maintenance contracts applying to medical equipment.
    • advise and inform medical staff of advantages/disadvantages of medical equipment
    • make recommendations to administration relative to equipment to be purchased and/or used, procedures to follow, propose changes in operations
