Overview
Barnes-Jewish Hospital is the St. Louis region’s top adult hospital. Formed from the merger of the former Barnes and Jewish Hospitals to become Missouri’s largest hospital, it continues the traditions of its predecessors along with its partner, Washington University School of Medicine, in providing cutting-edge treatments, educating future medical professionals and working to make our community as healthy as it can be.

Role Purpose
Responsible for the operation, maintenance, renovation, and repair of the boiler systems by providing oversite and maintenance on stationary engines, boilers, and other mechanical equipment, that provide utilities for buildings. Conducts plant operations, skilled maintenance, repair, adjustments, and fabrication/installation work and maintains a clean, safe, well maintained boiler room and machine room.
Responsibilities
Notifies appropriate leadership in the event of equipment malfunction, boiler casualty, or any other unforeseen event that negatively impact the operation of the boiler plant or the hospital steam system.
Operates engines, boilers, and auxiliary equipment. Reads gauges, meters, and charts to track boiler operations. Monitors boiler water, chemical, and fuel levels. Activates valve to change the amount of water, air, and fuel in the boilers.
Performs routine maintenance to include lubricating moving parts, replace filters, and removes soot and corrosion. Tests and chemically treats hydronic systems to prevent corrosion and harmful deposits. Handles replacement of defective valves, gaskets, or bearings or performs a complete overhaul of defected parts when needed.
Ensures equipment operates safely and within established limits but performing regular restarts of equipment while monitoring meters, gauges, and computerized controls. Must adhere to St. Louis City Mechanical Ordinance #70800 which states in Section 111 that “high pressure steam boilers” shall be in the charge of an attending licensed stationary engineer whenever in operation. The city defines attending as being able to monitor and control the equipment at all times.
Keeps detailed records of relevant events and facts concerning operations and maintenance in an equipment log. Records steam pressure, temperature, water level, power output, and fuel consumption
